The 10 Best Christmas Movies

The holidays are here! We just got done stuffing our bellies with Thanksgiving Turkey, and we’re off to Christmas! This time of the year flies by SO FAST! Each year I try to tell myself to slow down and ENJOY the holidays. I love the decorations this time of year. I don’t care if it’s at my house, the mall, the grocery store, or the houses in the neighborhood, I’m just giddy for the traditions of Christmas.

So in my best efforts this year, I want to slow down and enjoy the holidays. There, I said it again. I’ve seen how this movie ends every year. Before I can say “Merry Christmas”, it’s time to take down the tree and pack away the decorations for 10 and a half months. (yeah, I count it down too) Every year, you can see your favorite Christmas shows and movies on television, and now sometimes they are bringing the older ones back to the theaters! I’m a sucker for the TV animation (claymation) traditional TV shows like “Frosty The Snowman”, “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town”, and “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer “. Maybe those can be considered movies too, so let’s lump it all together. The 10 Best? Well, everyone is going to have a different opinion, and that is very much OK by me! What are your TOP 10? Here are mine:

10. A Charlie Brown Christmas

There is something to be said for this little bald kid, his dog and small, ugly tree. Charles Schultz wanted the real message of Christmas to be portrayed. I watched this every year on TV as a kid. As I grew up, I may have missed a few years, but when I had my kids, this was back on the TV! This is the longest running cartoon special in history playing every year since 1965.

9. The Polar Express

I remember all of the hype behind this movie when it was coming out. It was fun to watch, and I love the story. Plus, the jingle bell?! Brilliant!

8. The Santa Clause

Tim Allen was at the height of his popularity and played the perfect part. Fun movie!

7. Scrooged

Who better than Bill Murray to play Scrooge! Buster Poindexter, yeah the same guy who sang the song “Hot, Hot, Hot” and before that was in the New York Dolls. Classic!

6. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

Are you kidding? How many people in your neighborhood (or maybe it’s you) can take down the power grid with their lights? I love the classic Clark breakdowns!

5. How The Grinch Stole Christmas

This was a classic as a kid, as were all the other Dr. Seuss stories. When I was in college, we used to watch this in the dorms. Every time they said “Who”, we had to drink. Yeah, it didn’t take long to get drunk on that show! The singing voice of the Grinch is Thurl Ravenscroft. Remember the song “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch”? Thurl was also the voice of Tony the Tiger.

4. Home Alone

Slapstick. How could you not fall in love with this little helpless kid? Home Alone is a staple for the holidays.

3. The Nightmare Before Christmas

A very different twist on the idea of Christmas. Well, that’s pretty much the M.O. for Tim Burton. He will take the darker side to tell stories. Danny Elfman is Jack The Pumpkin King. Danny was the lead singer of the group Oingo Boingo (Weird Science, Dead Man’s Party). He became close with Tim Burton and Danny wrote the musical scores to many, many films. Google search him, and you will be AMAZED by his credit list. I had the pleasure of interviewing Danny at Disneyland in the house above Pirates Of The Caribbean. It was during Halloween when Disneyland transforms the Haunted Mansion into A Nightmare Before Christmas. What a great guy, and so very humble. An experience I will never forget!

2. Elf

OMG! I laugh OUT LOUD at this movie every time! Will Ferrell is perfect for the part. And Bob Newhart as the father elf? Really? Oh yeah.

NUMBER ONE…A Christmas Story

You’ll shoot your eye out kid!
