‘Blues Brothers’ Animated Series in the Works

By Jeff Cornell

The Blues Brothers are getting the band back together and will return in the form of a primetime animated TV series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show will follow Jake and Elwood Blues, along with their band, as they take their act on the road and back to their native Chicago. Each episode will feature a score and soundtrack curated with the soul, blues and R&B classics and hits performed by the Blues Brothers, as well as new performances made specifically for the show. The show will also feature special guest appearances from up-and-coming artists to Blues legends and pop stars.

Dan Aykroyd, Judy Belushi and ‘Saturday Night Live’ writer Anne Beatts will serve as co-creators and executive producers on the series.

According to THR, the show is aimed at young adults and will be shopped to various TV platforms this month.

Aykroyd released the following statement:

“It’s so great to accelerate Jake and Elwood at digital speed into the 21st Century… The show will be the Blues Brothers living in America and utilizing all new technology to make and promote their own records, seek out and record new artists and avoid law enforcement—and all while fighting for truth, justice and a better breakfast sandwich.”

Back in 1976, the Blues Brothers began as a musical sketch on Saturday Night Live starring Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi. The skit was so popular it launched a successful full-length album in 1978 and two years later The Blues Brothers movie was released. Following John Belishi’s death in 1982, many guests have filled the void including John Goodman, who starred opposite Aykroyd in the 1998 film Blues Brothers 2000.
