AUGUST 29 BIRTHDAYS

1920 – Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker (legendary jazz sax player – died 1955)

1924 – Dinah Washington (‘What A Difference A Day Makes – died 1963)

1943 – Dick Halligan (Blood Sweat and Tears – flute)

1958 – Alan Freed’s Big Beat Show opened at the Fox Theatre in Brooklyn with a line up that included Frankie Avalon, Jimmy Clanton, Chuck Berry, Bobby Freeman, Bill Haley and his Comets, and The Elegants.

1964 – Roy Orbison’s Oh Pretty Woman was released.  Four weeks later it was the #1 song on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.  The title was inspired by Roy’s wife Claudette interrupting a conversation to announce she was going out.  When Roy asked if she needed any cash, and before she could answer, his co-writer Bill Dees said ‘A pretty woman never needs any money’.

1965 – The Beatles played at The Hollywood Bowl. $3 bought you a ticket to the show. 12 years later performances from their 1964 and 1965 concerts were combined and released as a live album.  It has yet to see the light of day on CD or digital download.

August 29, 1977 – Three people were arrested in Memphis after trying to steal Elvis Presley’s body, resulting in the body being moved to Graceland for permanent burial.

1966 – The Beatles played their last concert at Candlestick Park i n San Francisco to a paying crowd of 25,000.  Knowing it was their last show, John and Paul brought cameras on stage and took pictures between songs.  The last song they sang as a live band?  Long Tall Sally.

Though little silent footage exists of The Beatles August 29, 1966 show (no one outside the group knew it was their last show) here’s an audience recording of most of the eleven songs they sang.
