Do you remember where you were when you caught word that Selena had been shot and killed?

19 years ago today, back in 1995 the song “Dreaming of You” by Selena debuted at #1 on the US charts. This was just four months after she was shot and killed by her fan club president AND days before turning 24.

The album “Dreaming Of You” debuted at #1 on the charts making her the FIRST Hispanic singer to do so. It was the second highest debut on the charts after Michael Jacksons album “HIStory”.  The video for “Dreaming of You” is about a young woman who sneaks away from her home to run off with the man she loves.

The video is very special to me.

Watch the video below and you will see that when the girl walks into her bedroom, she turns up the radio to hear the song “Dreaming of You”. The DJ on the radio introduces the song, and the video plays out. At the end of the song, the DJ speaks again and the video ends. The DJ on the video…it’s yours truly. My small claim to fame.

Here is the story.

In 1995, when Selena was shot and killed, I was working at a radio station in Los Angeles called Power 106. The killing of Selena was a major story for our audience. It was truly a sad day as Selena, already a BIG star in Tejano music, was on her way to becoming a HUGE Pop star in America. I was called by a gentleman named Sean Lynch at EMI records who I had known for many years. Sean asked if I would jump in the studio and lay down some song intro’s and outro’s for “Dreaming Of You”. I spent some time in the studio, laid down some tracks and sent them over to him. That was the last I heard of it. Then, a short time later, Sean called me and told me to watch the mail for a video tape coming my way. I got the tape and put it in, and there I could be heard on the video! That was my voice on the video doing the intro of the song and at the end of the video doing the outro of the song! I was beside myself. To this day, I am honored to be a part of the video.
