A month after Lifetime raised eyebrows and objections from Aaliyah‘s family over their plans to portray the late singer’s life in a biopic, the TV network is finding themselves in a similar situation – this time over a Whitney Houston biopic.
After attempts to stop production, Houston’s mother Cissy Houston is calling out Lifetime in a statement about the upcoming made-for-TV-movie.
“Lifetime has chosen to go ahead with the movie about Whitney in spite of my family’s objections,” she said, according to Billboard. “No one connected with this movie knew Whitney or anything about her relationship with Bobby. In the two years since Whitney’s death, many people have stepped forward to speak about their close relationship with her. I find it difficult to believe people who knew and supposedly loved her would participate in a movie about her done by folks who didn’t know her.
“We are exhausted by the continuing misinformation and comments offered by people who did not know her. Please, please let her rest.”
Houston’s main gripe that no one involved in the production actually knew her daughter is interesting, especially since the film stars Angela Bassett, who was friendly with Whitney Houston before her untimely death. The pair even played good friends on the silver screen in the 1995 film Waiting to Exhale.
