ON THIS DAY
1963 – The Beatles first American album ‘Introducing The Beatles’ was pressed by Vee Jay Records, who thought they had obtained the legal rights from EMI affiliate, Trans-Global Records. When it was finally released in January 1964 a few days before Capitol Records release of ‘Meet The Beatles’, Capitol went ballistic and hit Vee Jay with an injunction against manufacturing, distributing, advertising, or otherwise disposing of records by The Beatles. After a trial, Vee Jay was allowed to release any Beatles records they had any masters of until October 15, 1964. After that time, they no longer had the right to issue any Beatles product…..but they miled it for all it was worth during those 10 months.
1971 – John Lennon and Yoko Ono spend a second day of filming the “Imagine” promotional film at their home in England. The days footage included the morning walk on the grounds through the mist and John singing ‘Imagine’ in the white room on his white piano.
1989 – The ‘Batman’ soundtrack album by Prince began a six week run at the top of Billboard’s album chart.
2005 – Founding member and lead singer Eugene Record of The Chi-Lites lost his battle with cancer. Known for the hits “Have You Seen Her” and “Oh Girl”, Eugene also released three solo albums.
2006 – Three years after his death, Johnny Cash had the #1 albu in the country with ‘American V: a Hundred Highways’. Released posthumousley on July 4, Cash’s vocals from sessions recorded shortly before his death in 2003, were paired with new instrumentation recorded in 2005. A stunning album if you haven’t heard it.
2014 – Bobby Sherman is probably celebrating his 73rd birthday at his long time home in Encino with family and friends. He’s long been retired from show business and public life, and it’s almost impossible to find any recent pictures of him. But last year he received the Humanitarian Award during the Malibu Music Awards last October. I found a wonderful picture of Bobby and his wife Brigitte. They are truly salt of the earth people who are very generous with their time helping others. Click here to see the picture from the night and read up on some of the things Bobby’s been up too.
A truly remarkable man.
Happy Birthday Bobby.
