1996 – The remainder of  Grateful Dead leader Jerry Garcia’s ashes were scattered near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.  a small portion had been scattered in the Ganges River in India eleven days earlier.  He had died on August 9, 1995.

2005 – John Fred, who along with his Playboy Band topped the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Judy In Disguise (With Glasses’) died after a lengthy battle with kidney disease.  He was 63.

1982 – Billy Joel was reported to be in good condition and spirits after undergoing major surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York.  Billy had broken his left wrist when he hit a car while riding his 1978 Harley Davidson in Long Island.  The hospital switchboard was jammed with so many fans asking about his condition, that he had to issue a statement to please cease calling because they were ‘tying up lines for those people who are really sick’.  Thankfully, he made a full recovery.
