Part 9 of my 12 part series of The Beatles U.S. Albums set released last month, continues with the game changing ‘Rubber Soul’ album, whose American track line up varied greatly from the British version released on December 3, 1965.
Capitol Records released the album in mono and stereo on December 6, 1965 removing the songs ‘Drive My Car’, ‘If I Needed Someone’, ‘What Goes On’, and ‘Nowhere Man, replacing them with ‘It’s Only Love’ and ‘I’ve Just Seen A Face’.
‘Rubber Soul’ was #1 on the Billboard album chart in less than a month, knocking Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass ‘Whipped Cream and Other Delights’ out of the top spot, where it remained for six weeks. Ironically Herb Alpert would knock The Beatles from #1 on February 18, 1965, when ‘Going Places’ climbed to #1. ‘Rubber Soul’ would remain on Billboard’s album chart for a total of 59 weeks, eventually selling over six million copies.
Eleven of the twelve songs were written by Lennon-McCartney with the twelfth written by George Harrison.
The U.S. version of ‘Rubber Soul’ contains several unique mixes that have been retained on the set released last month: The mono version of ‘Michelle’ has the percussion mixed more in the foreground and a longer fade. The stereo version of ‘I’m Looking Through You’ contains two false starts which have been kept, and ‘The Word’ features John Lennon’s vocal double tracked. In 1987 producer George Martin remixed the stereo version from the four track masters, centering the vocals. The remaining stereo tracks come from the 2009 remaster of this re-mix.
