The Early Beatles was Capitol Records sixth album by The Beatles, and the only Capitol album not to crack top 10 on the Billboard album chart. Even ‘The Beatles Story’ (not reviewed for this series) made it to #7 while ‘The Early Beatles’ stalled at #43.
A little background: Capitol Records was the American division of EMI which owned the Beatles British record label Parlophone. When Capitol refused to release the group in the U.S. in 1963, their masters were licensed to other labels like Swan and Vee-Jay, which released the first Beatles album in the states ‘Introducing the Beatles’ on January 10, 1964 – a full ten days before Capitiol’s initial release ‘Meet the Beatles’. Capitol finally got the rights back from Vee-Jay by the end of the year 1964, but not before Vee-Jay sold almost a million and a half of their own album. So by the time Capitol issued The Early Beatles’ on March 22, 1965, the market had already been saturated with the material. Add to that the fact that Vee-Jay released a total of four albums in 1964 with (for all intents and purposes) the same tracks, is a wonder the Capitol release sold at all. The fact that it sold 1,000,000 units is nothing short of a miracle.
Six of the eleven tracks on the album were covers with only five being penned by Lennon-McCartney. Reverb was added to the mono and stereo vinyl issues, which seems to be missing from this re-master. The stereo tracks were combined to make the mono mix on the original issue – both versions here appear to be the 2009 masters used for the British issues.
John takes lead on four songs, Paul on two, John and Paul n another two, George Harrison on two, and Ringo on one.
