Why are 59 unreleased Beatles tracks available on iTunes today? There’s a simple explanation: British recordings only have a copyright valid for 50 years, and these Beatles tracks were in danger of falling into public domain, which would mean anyone could put them out on their own and sell them.

With Apple allowing their release now now, the copyrights on the material are extended for another 20 years.  Whether this means we’ll be seeing a similar effort to release more unreleased material each year for the next several years remains to be seen.  But as someone who’s been listening to lesser quality bootlegs of these tracks, it was almost a revelation to hear them directly from the master tapes.

59 tracks are available for $40 – a steal for Beatles fans. 14 of the outtakes are from three 1963 studio sessions, with 43 songs being taken from shows the group recorded for BBC radio – none of which are duplicated on the two volumes of previously released CD sets of BBC sessions.  The final two songs are demos that The Beatles  never recorded in the studio.

If you’re a casual Beatles fan, you probably won’t be bowled over with this set, but for the Beatles fanatic who wants to hear as much of what they recorded in the best fidelity (as much fidelity as you can get from an mp3 anyway) this helps fill an insatiable appetite for more music from the vaults.

The album is only available on iTunes, and won’t be released on CD though you can download the artwork and burn your own discs if you wish. You’ll need two blanks, as it clocks in at right around two hours and 10 minutes.

Regardless of the reasons this is being released, I’m happy to fork over the $40 for 60 tracks for my favorite group.  Christmas came early for this Beatles fan.
