1957 – Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel made their first appearance on American Bandstand under the nstage names they were using at the time, Tom and Jerry. ‘Hey Schoolgirl’, the song they plugged on the show was a minor hit for the duo a month later.
1963 – The Beatles second album ‘With The Beatles’ was released, becoming the first LP to have advance orders of a half million, and had sold another half million by September 1965, making it the first pop album to sell a million in the UK.
1976 – Jerry Lee Lewis was arrested for drunk driving after driving his rolls royce into a ditch. (and he’s still alive!)
1990 – The Rolling Stones Bill Wyman announced that his 17 month marriage to model Mandy Smith was over. With the consent of her mother, 13 year old Mandy had begun dating
the 47 year old bass player. No one was surprised at the outcome.
1991 – Alice Cooper came to the rescue of two fans in California whose home was about to be re-possessed. Patrick Kelly had painted Alice’s face on the house to help sell the property. When Alice got word, he signed autographs for the couple to help raise money.
1997 – Inxs singer Michael Hutchence was found dead in his hotel suite in Sydney. He had hung himself with his belt. He was 37.
2002 – The surviving members of The Doors, Ray Manzarek and Robby Kreiger, announced they would record and tour again with a new line up that included former cult singer Ian Astbury and former Police drummer Stewart Copeland. The Doors original drummer John Densmore could not take part because of health issues. One problem: no Jim Morrison, no Doors.
1968 – The Beatles ‘White’ album was released in the UK, the group’s first and only two disc set. In the UK it spent 8 weeks at #1 while here in the states it remained atop the Billboard album chart for 9 weeks.
