In Rolling Stone‘s upcoming cover story,Paul McCartney says that despite years of bitter conflict with Yoko Ono, they now enjoy a more friendly relationship.

“I thought, ‘If John loved her, there’s got to be something,” he said of Ono, whom he also called a “badass.” “He’s not stupid. It’s like, what are you going to do? Are you going to hold a grudge you never really had?”

Macca started mending fences with her years ago, and unsurprisingly, he did this on the advice of another former Beatle. “George [Harrison] would say to me, ‘You don’t want stuff like that hanging around in your life.'”

He says that he’s also in touch, in a way, with another former bandmate: John Lennon himself. Paul consults his one-time songwriting partner when he’s working on new music: “If I’m at a point where I go, ‘I’m not sure about this,’ I’ll throw it across the room to John. He’ll say, ‘You can’t go there, man.’ And I’ll say, ‘You’re quite right. How about this?’ ‘Yeah, that’s better.’ We’ll have a conversation. I don’t want to lose that.”
