We’ve been wondering who would be pulling out the feather boas and rose colored glasses to take on the role of Elton John in the Rocketman biopic for a while now, and now we know. According to EW.com, Tom Hardy, best known as Batman’s grunting enemy Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, has signed on to play Sir Elton.
When the film was first announced in January 2012, John had voiced his choice for Justin Timberlake to take on the role, based primarily on Timberlake’s turn as the honky cat in the music video for “This Train Don’t Stop There Anymore.”
In March of this year, Australian director Michael Gracey was announced as the project’s director. Gracey is currently working on the P.T. Barnum project The Greatest Showman On Earth starring Hugh Jackman.
Rocketman, which has an original screenplay by Billy Elliott and War Horse scribe Lee Hall, is currently scheduled to start shooting in the fall of 2014. The film will explore John’s childhood and seemingly meteoric rise to fame. John will re-record some of his classic tunes for the film.
