ON THIS DAY

1962 – John Lennon married his first wife Cynthia Powell at Liverpool’s Mt. Pleasant register office before rushing off to play a gig that night with the Beatles at Liverpool’s Riverpark Ballroom.  They were divorced on November 8, 1968.

1969 – Johnny Cash began a 4 week run atop the Billboard Album Chart with ‘Johnny Cash At San Quentin’ recorded live at the prison.  When ‘A Boy Named Sue” was released as a single from the album, it peaked at #2 for two weeks, kept out of the top spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart by The Rolling Stones ‘Honky Tonk Woman’.

2004 – Queen became the first rock band to receive official approval in Iran, where western music was strictly a no-no.  Lead singer Freddie Mercury, who had died 13 years earlier, was of Iranian ancestory and bootlegged albums had been available in the country for years.

1967 – Celebrating during a wild 20th birthday party, drummer Keith Moon of The Who, drove his Lincoln car into a Holiday Inn swimming pool.  How’d it happen?  Earlier in the evening police had been called to shut down what had become an out of control party.  When they arrived, Keith snuck outside and got into a Lincoln Continental Limo attempting to make a getaway.  But in his drunken state he released the handbreak and began rolling toward the pool, at which point he just sat back and waited as the vehicle crashed through the fence around the pool and on into the water.

Happy 64th Birthday Rick Springfield!
