Marty Lacker has the answer, and he should.  Elvis and Marty met when they were in junior high school in Memphis, and remained lifelong friends.

Marty was one of two ‘best men’ Elvis chose when he marred Priscilla in 1967.  He was one of the so called ‘Memphis Mafia’ before branching out on his own in the record business.  He’s been very generous with his time and is brutally honest about what really happened behind the walls of  the publicity Tom Parker created.  I spent an hour in conversation with Marty a couple of years ago while I was going through a box set containing every commercially released Elvis recording. When i brought up ‘The Colonel’, he bristled with this response.
