As we wind down the summer we can usually expect that with the kids going back to school and people finishing up vacation time, things slow down considerably in the box office.
This week brought us quite a few new entries into the theaters and the one that didn’t get much hype but did fare well is Matt Damon’s latest. Elysium ended up in that top slot over the weekend bringing in over $30mil. This topped the other 3 newcomers that dropped into the top 5 over the weekend. And it didn’t get the pre-hype you would expect for a film with Matt Damon. However it fared well, considering.
It actually is Damon’s best debut since the Bourne series ended. There were also some other strong entries into the box office this weekend most notably the road trip comedy “We’re the Millers”. I have heard great things about this one. A must see if you are looking for some laughs. This actually had a strong opening in comparison to some other recent comedies of this type. Especially taking into consideration the time of year.
What else can you be looking to see that did well over the weekend if you are heading out during this week? Well here is a look at the entire top five to help you make a decision. No matter what you are looking for it’s pretty much covered in this top five….
#2. We’re the Millers
#3. Disney’s Planes
#4. Perry Jackson – Sea of Monsters
