Bassist and founding member of the British Invasion band The Dave Clark Five, Rick Huxley, has died at the age of 72, the BBC reports.

Huxley had recently been battling emphysema due to years of heavy smoking. His death leaves just two original members of the Dave Clark Five: drummer and leader Dave Clark and guitarist Lenny Davidson.

Clark told the BBC he spoke to Huxley at least once a week and that during a conversation with him on Friday, Huxley was “in great spirits.”

After joining the band in 1958, Huxley started out as the combo’s rhythm guitar player but moved to bass a year later. Huxley stayed in the group until it split in 1970 and then pursued a career in the real estate and music businesses.

The Dave Clark Five’s biggest hit, “Glad All Over,” jumped to the top of the charts in 1964 and the group became one of the first British bands to tour the U.S., subsequently making 18 appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show. The Dave Clark Five were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.
