Today’s birthdays include  Neil Matthews of Elvis Presley’s backup group The Jordanaires who’s 83, Herman’s Hermits guitarist Keith Hopwood who’s 72, Michael Piano of the Sandpipers (Come Saturday Morning) is 68, Leslie West of Mountain (Mississippi Queen) is 67, The B-52’s Keith Strickland is 59, and The Dixie Chicks Natalie Merchant (10,000 Maniacs)is 51.

October 26, 1962 – the Rolling Stones recorded their first demo tape in London.

October 26, 1970 – A wake was held in San Anseimo, California to celebrate the life of Janis Joplin.  Janis had left $2,500 in her will to throw a wake party in the event of her death.  Her sister Laura attended.

October 26, 1991 – Concert promoter Bill Graham was killed in a helicopter crash.

October 26, 1965 – Queen Elizabeth II invested The Beatles with their MBE’s at Buckingham Palace.  When asked how he enjoyed meeting The Queen, John Lennon said “She’s much nicer than she is in the photos”.
