Peter Asher’s early connection to Paul McCarthy was through his sister. Paul and his sister dated so Paul would be at his house on a regular basis and was given the upstairs room with Asher. Paul McCarthy’s 1st big hit in the United States with The Beatles was, “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”. The story behind this song was Peter Asher’s mother was an oboe player so she used to have lessons in the basement of their house. McCarthy liked going in the basement to practice. One day when John came over to practice with him, they called to Asher from the stairs to come and hear a song that they came up with. ” I Wanna Hold Your Hand” was first heard by Peter Asher and he was there for the creation of it.
