R.I.P., R.B. Greaves
I think we have another Celebrity Death Trifecta in the works. The whole world knows about the loss of legendary singer Andy Williams on 9/25. But, were you aware R.B. Greaves died two days later? No cause of death has been given. In fact, good luck finding ANY official documentation of his passing!
Ronald Bertram Aloysius Greaves is actually Sam Cooke‘s nephew. Music was in the genes! Greaves has been mislabeled (as far as I’m concerned) as a “one hit wonder.” His first song, “Take A Letter Maria,” hit #2 on the Billboard H0t 100. That’s a tough feat to repeat! While he wrote this song, it was originally recorded by both Stevie Wonder and Tom Jones. They couldn’t make it a hit. So, the record label president insisted he perform it himself. BAM…huge hit!
You know the song “Always Something There To Remind Me” from Naked Eyes, right? While he didn’t write it, Greaves DID record it…13 years earlier!
One more cover you’ll recognize is “Whiter Shade Of Pale.” He added some soul that I feel was missing from the Procol Harum version.
