Drummer/percussionist Jaimoe has spent the better part of the past four decades as a member of the Allman Brothers Band, but before he co-founded Georgia’s finest jam band, he played in Otis Redding’s backing group.

Joining the soul legend’s band in the spring of 1966, Jaimoe (real name: Jai Johanny Johanson) would soon learn “one great lesson” from Redding. It was one that he’d carry through his life, but it wasn’t musical advice. Rather, it was financial, and a lesson that fiscal conservatives would applaud: Debt doesn’t pay. Watch Jaimoe explain in our video interview below.

Last year, Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band released their first studio album (after two live records), Renaissance Man. Meanwhile, Jaimoe and the Allman Brothers Band kicked off tour dates with Santana last month.
