Sherman Hemsley, the man who made George Jefferson jump out of your TV screen, died today at age 74. Natural causes appear to be the culprit. CLICK HERE for the story.
I was devastated when Carroll O’Connor (Archie Bunker) died. I feel the same today. As a child, I spent SO many hours in front of the television. That Sunday night CBS lineup of 60 Minutes, All In The Family, One Day At A Time, The Jeffersons and Alice was always appointment viewing for my family and me! My love for Sherman Hemsley continued even after The Jeffersons went off the air in 1985. Who remembers Amen? Deacon Frye was a tad nicer. But, there was still a glimmer of George in his eyes.
What I do NOT remember is Hemsley’s musical career. Take a look at this rare gem from Soul Train in 1992:
Somehow I missed that one 20 years ago! Have you ever seen or heard it before?
So, let’s see where this puts us in the current Celebrity Death Trifecta:
- Sally Ride (astronaut)
- Sherman Hemsley (actor/singer)
Who will it be? Everyone’s on Zsa Zsa watch, but I think she’s going to outlast us all…much like Abe Vigoda!
UPDATE: Just hours after writing this blog, news broke of Chad Everett‘s death. Chad’s best known for playing Dr. Joe Gannon on the TV show Medical Center. He makes #3 on this CDT. CLICK HERE for more on this story.
