July 20, 1940, the first comprehensive pop record chart was published in Billboard magazine , which continues to this day as the Billboard Hot 100. The first #1 song was I’ll Never Smile Again by Frank Sinatra with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. It would be another 15 years before Rock Around the Clock became the first rock and roll record to top the chart.
July 20, 1954, Elvis Presley along with Scotty Moore and Bill Black, made their live debut on the back of a flatbed truck outside a drug store grand opening in Memphis.
July 20, 1971, The Carpenters TV show Make Your Own Kind Of music started a six week summer replacement run. Though tapes of the show still exist, it has never been available on home video.
