From Steve Goddard

It’s one of those 25 Or 6 To 4 situations.  When you learn that Chicago‘s hit song 26 Or 6 To 4 refers to the time the song was written (25 or 26 minutes to 4 in the morning) it all makes sense.  It’s the same with The Mamas and Papas song Creeque Alley, which is the story of how the members came together.  Creeque Alley was the location of a club in the Virgin Islands where the group spent some formative time together. It was a top 5 hit for the group in 1967, so obviously a lot of people were interested in the family treeline.  The late John Phillips wrote the song for the benefit of their producer Lou Adler.

Here’s what he told me about it when we spoke in the mid 80′s.
