Today’s KOOL Kollective video/song always cracks me up when we play it on KOOL FM, because I keep envisioning this lady, Sally, driving around in this Mustang just wasting gas! I know back then, gas prices were much more affordable, but in this day and age, she wouldn’t be driving around for nothing.
“Mustang Sally” was originally recorded in 1965 by Mack Rice – whose written songs and popular compositions for the likes of Ike and Tina (Turner), Etta James, The Rascals and more! Wilson Pickett made it a hit the following year.
The song peaked at #23 on the Pop charts in 1966 and #6 on the R&B chart. To date, “Mustang Sally” is ranked #434 on Rolling Stones, “500 Greatest Hits Of All Time”.
The story behind the song title? According to Tom Shannon, music historian, the song began as a joke when Della Reese told Rice she wanted to get a new Ford Mustang. The song was originally titled, “Mustang Mama,” but soon changed after R&B diva, Aretha Franklin, suggested he changed the title to “Mustang Sally.” Enjoy!
