Right at the top of the list of the most anticipated musical reunions of the year sits the Beach Boys, who are celebrating their 50th anniversary with their first studio album featuring all surviving members (Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks) since 1996’s Stars and Stripes Vol. I.

The reunion, which kicked off with a performance at the Grammys back in February, is starting to ramp up, as the Beach Boys kick off their 50-date summer tour tonight (April 24) in Tucson, Arizona. Now the surf-rock legends have announced a June 5th release date for the currently untitled album of brand new material, to be released through Capitol/EMI.

In addition to finally announcing the album’s release date, the Beach Boys recently premiered a teaser video highlighting their new single, “That’s Why God Made the Radio.” Watch the teaser video, which features the band in the recording studio, below.

“That’s Why God Made the Radio,” which is available now digitally, is a midtempo, harmony-filled ode “to the radio and what it’s meant to so many millions and millions of people,” notes lead singer Mike Love in the clip above. “Music has been a blessing to us,” Love continues. “Radio’s been the vehicle to be able to express that kind of gratitude and thank you in terms of a pop song.” Brian Wilson sums it up succinctly: “Radio was my whole education.”

Speaking with New York station CBS-FM, guitarist Al Jardine praised the legendary talents of Wilson: “When you’re singing the melodies and the harmonies written by Brian Wilson, it’s a life-affirming thing.”

Speaking with Billboard, keyboardist/bassist Bruce Johnston described the new album as “a lot of what you’d hope to hear from Brian [Wilson] on there.” “It’s not a quilt or a pot luck dinner,” he continued. “It’s not like, ‘OK, everybody show up with your songs.’ It’s not one of those kind of albums. There’s a lot of Brian in there, and Mike [Love]. It’s just nice to know there is a Mike Love and a Brian Wilson still around to write together.”

Yes, it is.
