While presidential candidate Mitt Romney is apparently cruising to the Republican nomination, he can count one less rocker among his supporters. Gene Simmons, the charismatic frontman for the iconic rock band KISS, has clarified that, contrary to news reports, he has endorsed no candidate for president, despite singing Romney’s praises.
“I have not endorsed either Gov. Romney or Pres Obama,” he wrote in a statement posted to GeneSimmons.com. “I am socially liberal. And I am a fiscal and foreign policy conservative…I HAVE NOT MADE UP MY MIND.”
Simmons’ announcement comes just days after his appearance on FOX News’ conservative talk show Fox and Friends. Durring the TV conversation, he admitted that he voted for President Barack Obama in 2008 and has become disillusioned by the president’s performance.
“Hindsight is 20/20,” he said on Fox And Friends’ Wednesday (April 3) show. ”I have some real issues with the economy and how it’s being done. America should be in business and it should be run by a businessman.”
When pressed about which candidate would be best as president, he responded: “Strickly speaking, on the economy, in my humble opinion, Mitt Romney.”
Yesterday, Simmons took to his website to clarify his remarks. He did say he believes Romney “has more qualifications (in fiscal economic areas) than our President.” But, he went on to write, “I want to hear what both Gov Romney and Pres Obama have to say. And THEN I will pull the lever as my conscience dictates.”
While Simmons refused to make an official endorsement for Obama or Romney, he ruled out the other candidates vying for the GOP nomination.
“Mr. Santorum is unelectable in my estimation,” he wrote. “Mr. Gingrich comes with some baggage that won’t work for the women of America. Mr. Paul has some interesting ideas that seem appealing on the surface, but other ideas strike me as too idealistic and not very pragmatic.”
Aside from his clarification and political analysis, Simmons had another message embedded within his post.
“I have no idea why anyone would be interested in who I would vote for,” he wrote, “or for that matter who anyone else would vote for.”
Although Simmons has balked, Romney has received endorsements from musicians such as Ted Nugent and Kid Rock.
