The Best and Worst Hosts in the History of the Oscars
A “Huffington Post” columnist has ranked the last 59 hosts of the Oscars, dating back to the “25th Academy Awards” in 1953, which was the first to be televised.
Not surprisingly, BILLY CRYSTAL got a TON of love. He’s hosted the Oscars eight times . . . and he’s back to do it a ninth time this Sunday, at the “84th Academy Awards”.
Who was your favorite? Who do you think was the worst?
Here’s the Top 10:
1.) Billy Crystal (1992)
2.) Whoopi Goldberg (1996)
3.) Billy Crystal (1990)
4.) Billy Crystal (1991)
5.) Billy Crystal (1998)
6.) Billy Crystal (1997)
7.) Bob Hope, Jerry Lewis, David Niven, Laurence Olivier, Tony Randall and comedian Mort Sahl (1959)
8.) Johnny Carson (1979)
9.) Bob Hope, Jack Lemmon, David Niven, Rosalind Russell, James Stewart and Donald Duck (1958)
10.) Bob Hope (1978)
So, FIVE of Billy’s EIGHT Oscar hosting gigs were in the Top 10 over the past 59 years. His 2000 hosting gig was ranked #11 . . . his job in 2004 was ranked 18th . . . and his 1993 gig ranked 45th. Not even Billy can nail it every time.
They also ranked the WORST Oscar hosts. And according to the list, JAMES FRANCO and ANNE HATHAWAY weren’t just awkward last year . . . they were the worst hosts over the past 59 years.
But the 1989 ceremony was actually ranked lower because there was NO host . . . and the writer says that resulted in a “train wreck.” Here’s the Bottom 10:
1.) Nobody (1989) . . . So, this would also be considered the 59th best.
2.) James Franco and Anne Hathaway (2011)
3.) Walter Matthau, Liza Minnelli, Dudley Moore and Richard Pryor (1983)
4.) Sammy Davis Jr., Bob Hope, Shirley MacLaine and Frank Sinatra (1975)
5.) Ellen DeGeneres (2007)
6.) Chevy Chase (1988)
7.) Whoopi Goldberg (1999)
8.) Jon Stewart (2006)
9.) Chris Rock (2005)
10.) David Letterman (1995)
