[lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Simon Cowell[/lastfm]‘s firing of [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Paula Abdul[/lastfm] from X Factor has been compared to a scenario of Johnny Carson dumping Ed McMahon.  Or Mr. Krabs doing the same to SpongeBob[lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Nicole Scherzinger[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Steve Jones[/lastfm] joined Paula in the ranks of ex X Factor judges, with only [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]L.A. Reid [/lastfm]and Simon returning.  Nicole and Steve may have seemed expendable, but why Paula and her big sister persona?

The show works because the judges have to mentor the talent, and actually compete with one another.  Paula didn’t do that.  She sat back and nurtured, which is her strong suit, but she really never mentored.  And the sparring between [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]L.A. Reid[/lastfm] and Simon quickly overshadowed Paula‘s role.  So with three vacancies to fill on the show, who are the early contenders for consideration?

One longtime friend of[lastfm link_type="artist_info"] Simon Cowell[/lastfm]‘s would have been one of the original judges if she hadn’t been pregnant at the time the show was launched.  Don’t be surprised if a deal is worked out with [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Mariah Carey[/lastfm].

Earlier today Simon Cowell released this statement.

“I want to say a massive thank you to Paula, Nicole and Steve for being part of ‘The X Factor’ last year. We had a lot of fun making the show together and importantly, we found some real talent and stars. You do develop friendships with the people you work with and Paula, in particular, is a very close friend and I expect to be working with her on another project in the near future. I’m sure all three are going to have massive success in what they do next , but now is the time to thank them all for everything they did last year.”
