Best Sellers From The ’80s: Genesis’ “Invisible Touch”
Despite their busy solo schedules, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Genesis[/lastfm] members Banks, Rutherford and Collins found time to record and release Invisible Touch in 1986. It spawned five Top 5 singles, the first band to do so, and sold over 7 million copies.
It happened at the Farm in Surrey, England, the place where Genesis had recorded many of their albums.
Comprised of eight tracks, all written collectively by the band, it hit #2 on the US chart and #3 in the UK on the strength of those five singles.
After three singles stalled on the charts, the title cut got things moving for the band, landing at #1 in mid-’86. The ballad “Throwing It All Away” and the raucous “Land of Confusion” both hit #3 while “In Too Deep” and “Tonight, Tonight, Tonight” were #3 hits (despite the latter’s nearly nine minute length).
Invisible Touch precipitated a tour, of course, their biggest to date.
