When Thanksgiving Goes Bad!

Sometimes, things just don’t go as planned on the big day.  After all, you’re getting together with family and we all know what that means!

We had listeners calling in with problems they’ve had in the past.

And who can forget that WKRP episode back in 1978…

By the way, if you need instructions on how long to thaw and/or cook your turkey, you’re in luck!    With a nod to Butterball, here ya go…

  1. How long will it take to thaw my turkey? They recommend thawing your turkey in the refrigerator in its original wrapping. Place it on a shallow tray on the bottom shelf and allow 1 day for every 4 pounds of turkey. If you don’t have time to thaw in the refrigerator, use the cold water method – completely submerge the turkey, breast side down, in cold water. Change the water every 30 minutes to hasten thawing and allow about 30 minutes per pound of turkey. Some general thawing time guidelines are as follows:

Size (lb.)

Refrigerator (days.)

Cold Water (hrs.)

8 to 12 2 to 3 4 to 6
12 to 16 3 to 4 6 to 8
16 to 20 4 to 5 8 to 10
20 to 24 5 to 6 10 to 12
24 to 30 6 to 7 12 to 15
  1. How long will it take to roast my turkey? Using the Butterball open pan method (flat rack, shallow open roasting pan), 325° conventional oven, you can expect the following cooking times:

Size (lb.)

Unstuffed (hrs.)

Stuffed (hrs.)

7 to 10 2½ to 3 2¾ to 3½
10 to 18 3 to 3½ 3¾ to 4½
18 to 22 3½ to 4 4½ to 5
22 to 24 4 to 4½ 5 to 5½
24 to 30 4½ to 5 5½ to 6¼
