Here at KOOL, we play a whole bunch of catchy songs. I couldn’t imagine having to pick the catchiest! I’ll leave THAT to the scientists. Oh, you think I’m kidding. The study actually exists! Dr. Daniel Mullensiefen of Goldsmiths University in London headed a research project to find the “catchiest pop song of all-time.” Any clue what it is?
Researchers wanted to know why certain songs inspired people to sing out loud. They determined there were some key elements to a “catchy song:”
- Long and detailed musical phrases
- Multiple pitch changes in a song’s hook
- Male vocalists and higher male voices making a noticeable vocal effort.
According to Dr. Mullensiefen, musical hits rely on”‘maths, science, engineering and technology.” Sure sounds complicated! So, forget all that. What is the “catchiest song of all-time?”
Well, it’s NOT “Brown Eyed Girl.” But, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Van Morrison[/lastfm] DID make the list!
Nor is it “The Final Countdown.” But [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Europe[/lastfm] was actually in the top FIVE!
EVERYONE sings along to “Livin’ On A Prayer!” This HAS to be it, right? Nope. But, kudos to [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Bon Jovi[/lastfm] for an honorable mention.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is #2. Much love for the [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Village People[/lastfm]! And now, drum roll please…
Did you sing along with [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Freddie Mercury[/lastfm]? I sure hope so. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Queen[/lastfm]’s “We Are The Champions” was determined to be the catchiest pop song of all-time!
