Would YOU buy Schweddy Balls? It’ll soon be available in your grocer’s freezer! That’s the newest flavor of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. If you’re horribly offended, then you probably don’t know the origin of the concept. In 1998, Alec Baldwin was guest hosting Saturday Night Live. He did a skit as Pete Schweddy with Molly Shannon and Ana Gasteyer called “Delicious Dish.” It was a play on the “excitement” of National Public Radio.
The new flavor is described as “Vanilla ice cream with a hint of rum & loaded with fudge covered rum & malt balls.” Ya know…they had me at rum!
Upon hearing the news, Alec issued a press release: “For a long time, I thought that ‘Here Lies Pete Schweddy’would end up on my tombstone. Now, thanks to Ben & Jerry’s, the goodness of the Schweddy family recipe won’t go with me to the great beyond. It is immortalized here, right now, and it’s an ice cream. Ben & Jerry’s and Schweddy. Two great names in American dessert, together at last.”
I was hesitant to post this. But, I figure…if the video appeared on “Inside The Actors Studio,” it’s gotta be classy enough for KOOL! Ahh, the art of double entendre. GENIUS!
