Originally planned to look like a mock high school yearbook, the cover of [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Big Brother and the Holding Company[/lastfm]‘s Cheap Thrills album instead joined the pantheon of great album covers with its original artwork by artist R. Crumb.
It was the idea of drummer Dave Getz to enlist Crumb as as one of the album’s artists. What we see on the cover was actually planned for the back of the record — hence the band’s personnel listing — but was moved to the front when the yearbook idea fell flat.
It’s now considered a rock and roll classic and spices up an album that was orignally called Sex, Dope & Cheap Thrills but was shortened at the behest of the group’s label, Columbia Records.
