[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Nick Ashford[/lastfm], who died in New York yesterday after a battle with throat cancer, along with his wife and songwriting partner [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Valerie Simpson[/lastfm], wrote some of the best hits of Motown‘s golden period in the 60’s and 70’s.  One song in particular was a hit in both decades for two different Motown artists, with two very different versions.  [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Marvin Gaye[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Tammi Terrell[/lastfm] gave the song a gritty performance, while [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Diana Ross[/lastfm] made it what I’d have to call “diva drama”.  Both versions were hits.

The song was Ain’t No Mountain High Enough
