On July 4, 1964, the [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Beach Boys[/lastfm] scored their first Number 1 hit in the US. It wasn’t an easy birth.

Though the Beach Boys had released nine previous singles — including Top 10’s “Surfer Girl” and “Surfin’ USA” — they toiled without a chart-topper for two years before “I Get Around” finally reached the pinnacle of the Hot 100.

The struggle to find that elusive Number 1 was made worse by the conflict the recording session brought between  mastermind [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Brian Wilson[/lastfm] and his Dad, Murry.

In the course of the production, an argument caused Brian to shove his Dad, leading him to leave the studio and not return for another session. In an apology, it was learned that Brian’s legendary perfectionism was the cause of the rift.

When all was said and done, “I Get Around” was their biggest single success ever. Three more Number 1’s would follow.

There’s a lot more ammo where this came from. Check out more songs that were “#1 with a Bullet” here…
