Hot Butter - "Popcorn" (Musicor Records, 1972)
Listed as one of the Top-10 One-Hit Wonders of 1972, the song “Popcorn” by [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Hot Butter[/lastfm] deserves about one listen every 24 months. Now is the time.
At one listening every two years, “Popcorn” is a charming piece of ’70s pop culture; after that, it’s grating.
For the record, Hot Butter was actually synthesizer pioneer Stan Free who, in the days when one synthesizer was the size of a Volkswagen Beetle, programmed the massive machines for the likes of everyone from [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]John Denver[/lastfm] to the Boston Pops. In October 1972, he programmed himself a Number 9 hit.
