It’s Comic-Con week, and fans by the thousands, along with plenty of celebrities are flocking to San Diego for the biggest geek celebration of the year. With an attendance of over 250,000 people, hundreds of vendors and almost five days of nonstop events, Comic Con can definitely be a sensory overload. To make things easy, we put together a list of the Top 10 hottest things going on at this year’s Comic-Con… this is the best of the best reasons to check out this year’s show!
10. Community Stars Live
We’re just gonna say it– we love Community, and you should too. NBC’s comedy about Joel McHale and a crew of misfits attending the world’s worst community college is one of the smartest and funniest shows on TV, and the whole cast will be appearing live at Comic Con for a presentation and sneak peek at Season 3, coming out this Fall!
9. The Lord of the Rings Takes Over the Gaslamp District
Details are being kept under wraps, but Warner Bros. Interactive will be hosting a huge spectacle on Saturday night to promote their new Lord of the Rings video game, War in the North. Here’s what Warner had to say about the event:
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and the upcoming 2011 videogame The Lord of the Rings: War in the North invites the general public to a special event at 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, during Comic-Con 2011 week. In the heart of San Diego’s Gaslamp District, at 5th Avenue and J Street, fans can experience Middle-earth like never before with a special surprise spectacle, and play the new The Lord of the Rings: War in the North video game months before its official release. Beginning on Wednesday, July 20, fans can text WITN to 82257 or log on to http://www.warinthenorth.com/comic-con for more details about this not-to-be missed event. To help promote the event, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment joined with other Warner Bros. divisions in sponsoring the hotel key cards at 36 hotels in the San Diego area during the ‘Con.
Sounds pretty cool!
8. etnies and Kevin Smith’s Smeaker Launch Party
Filmmaker Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy, Zack and Miri Make a Porno) is teaming up with etnies to release a new sneaker he designed! They’re also hosting the official launch party of the “Smeaker” at Comic Con, with Kevin recording a live show of his SMODCAST series direct from the party all night!
7. The Amazing Spider-Man
Early buzz was a lot of movie studios were pulling out of Comic Con this year, but Sony will be at the show in full force, with previews of a bunch of their upcoming films like Ghost Rider, 30 Minutes or Less, and the star of their show– The Amazing Spider-Man!
The new movie will reboot the series from the ground up, returning the webslinger, now played by The Social Network’s Andrew Garfield, to high school for all new adventures. The sneak peeks that have been revealed so far make this new Spidey movie look fantastic, and an appearance by the cast and crew at Comic Con is sure to build even more hype for the 2012 action movie.
6. 2011 Comic-Con Masquerade
One of the things that’s completely unique to Comic Con is the Masquerade, the annual costume ball/ fashion show where fans can show off their elaborate, incredible– and sometimes incredibly goofy– homemade costumes. It’s a wild way to spend a Saturday evening, watching a parade of hardcore fans decked out like their favorite characters from Star Wars, Batman and everything else you can imagine.
And we mean everything– last year we spotted Carmen San Diego hanging out with Waldo from Where’s Waldo!
5. The Return of Beavis and Butthead
MTV’s most famous duo haven’t been seen in over a decade, but the iconic dead-enders are making their TV comeback later this year! Creator Mike Judge will present the first glimpse of the new adventures of the generation-defining morons, with a promise that the pop culture icons will rip into not only modern music videos, but also Jersey Shore, viral videos, and more!
William Shatner will take center stage at a party celebrating the erstwhile star, best known as the original Captain Kirk on Star Trek. Since then, Shatner’s career has taken him some crazy and hilarious places (if you haven’t heard his 2004 album “Has Been” you should right now!!)… the party will presumably celebrate all facets of The Shat, and he’ll also premiere his new documentary The Captains, which features him interviewing the other Star Trek captains who followed in his footsteps.
Last year Shatner hosted a wild night on a battleship, and we’re pretty sure he’ll try to top that this year!
3. Cowboys and Aliens Red Carpet Premiere
As a tribute to the thousands of fans in San Diego, director Jon Favreau decided to move the gala red carpet premiere for his new movie Cowboys and Aliens from Hollywood to San Diego, and he’s inviting attendees of Comic Con to rub elbows with A-List stars like Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Sam Rockwell and Olivia Wilde!
The high profile movie premiere will take place at the Civic Theater in downtown San Diego, and is sure to be a fantastic and star-studded photo opportunity for fans!
2. Entertainment Weekly’s 5th Annual Comic-Con Celebration
Each year Entertainment Weekly hosts THE party at Comic Con, on the rooftop of a local area hotel. It’s a chance for fans lucky enough to get in can hang out for the night with A-List actors, directors, comic creators and a who’s-who of Comic Con celebs. Last year’s party was attended by stars of True Blood, Glee, Chuck and many more… who knows who may show up at this year’s edition of the convention’s most exclusive get-together!
1. Our First Look at Twilight: Breaking Dawn

Fans will be able to catch some inside info (and maybe some advanced footage) from the finale, and see the series stars such as Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner live at Comic Con!
