Honor and Valor
They don’t hand these out very often! As a former Army “Grunt” I served in the Infantry in Vietnam..”This Guy Is A True Hero”!
President Obama awarded the Nation’s highest military honor “The Medal Of Honor” to Sgt 1st Class Leroy Arthur Petry after taking enemy fire in Afghanistan. It all unfolded on May 26,2008 in the remote Eastern Afghanistan. Petry and other Rangers choppered toward an insurgent compound. When they arrived they came under automatic weapons fire and Petry was hit in both legs. As he fell grenades came flying towards him and his fellow soldiers. He picked up one and tried to hurl it back before it exploded! The grenade blew his right hand off, but his two comrades were saved! Petry kept going forward issuing orders to his unit to “fight And Win”. It was “something extraordinary,” Obama said, “This is stuff of which heroes are made!” Petry, a Santa Fe,N.M. native, who now serves with the 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Benning, Ga..My “alma- mata”, spoke to reporters outside the White House after the ceremony. He sought to turn the attention away from himself and towards other Rangers, service members and families. Petry is only the second living active-duty service member who fought in Iraq or Afghanistan to receive The Medal Of Honor. The first recipient was Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta, who received the honor last fall for his actions chasing down the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2007! Gentlemen, “I Salute You!” THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE and yes YOU ARE HEROES!
