Just like couples celebrate anniversaries and birthdays together, I think car owners should celebrate similar milestones with their cars. In this day and age, it’s a huge accomplishment when a relationship lasts – say…25 years. How about when your car lasts – say…100,000 miles? It’s a special occasion! Just be very careful. Obviously, it’s going to happen while you’re in motion.
I’ll never forget the day I bought my first brand new car! It was a Chevy Cavalier. OK, so it wasn’t a Corvette. But, that’s not too shabby for a 19 year-old punk kid! Once I brought it home from the dealer, I think I stared at the car for an hour straight. The neighbors thought I was a little cuckoo. I probably was! That was a GREAT day.
Another great day came about 5 years down the road. I was living in Chicago and driving late one night on the Kennedy Expressway (I-90). I knew my Cavalier odometer was getting close to the 6 digit mark. But, as usual, life had gotten in the way and distracted me. So, I forgot about the upcoming “MILEstone.” As you can imagine, in a city the size of Chicago, the Kennedy is most always JAMMED. 8 lanes are all filled with irate drivers in more of a hurry than everyone else. I had just been cut off by one of those drivers when I happened to glance down. What did I see? 99,999.8. Whoa. We’re just about there!
Remember: this was an era WITHOUT cellphone cameras. So, there was not going to be any photographic evidence of the event. I had to “live in the moment” and get the most out of the experience. So, my eyes looked up…and down…and up…and down…for the next 10-15 seconds. Once it actually hit 100K, I rolled down the windows and let out a loud “YEEEAH!” What I DIDN’T count on was the guy who had just cut me off thinking I was yelling…at HIM.
Uh-oh. Party’s OVER.
