You could make a case for it during the early months of the British Invasion when the[lastfm link_type="artist_info"] Dave Clark Five [/lastfm]charted 14 tracks between February 1964 and November 1965. Early on I thought D[lastfm link_type="artist_info"]ave Clark[/lastfm] (on drums) sang lead on their hits, then found out it was [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Mike Smith[/lastfm] (far right – keyboards) that did the honors. Mike had one of the great rock and roll voices of all time right up to the time of his 2003 accident which resulted in his paralysis and death 5 years later. I’m playing their first American hit as one of my Turntable Tuesday songs this afternoon. One side note, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]The Beatles[/lastfm] were initially known for ‘The Liverpool Sound”, so [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Dave Clark [/lastfm]was asked whether they had a “Tottenham” sound reflecting the area they were from.
