On this Father’s Day weekend, let’s keep it simple, with some of our favorite artists and who their fathers were.

Although their son was born in South Africa, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Dave Matthews[/lastfm]’ parents were American. When Dave was two, his father John, a physicist, relocated the family to the United States when he took a job with IBM. The family also lived for a time in England, and returned to South Africa after John’s death, when Dave was 10.

Ross McManus was a professional musician who wrote and sang commercial jingles. His son’s first recording was on a jingle Ross wrote for a television commercial in which they both appeared. McManus had used the stage name Day Costello, a variation on his wife’s maiden name; his son called himself D. P. Costello for a while before changing to [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Elvis Costello[/lastfm].

In 1949, when [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Duane Allman[/lastfm] was three years old and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Gregg Allman[/lastfm] just two, their father, Willis Allman, was murdered. He was a career Army officer who was killed by another veteran he had befriended.

Like many European Jews in the 1930s, Louis Simon emigrated to escape the Nazis. He had been a professional musician in Hungary; in America he became a bandleader on several radio shows. When [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Paul Simon[/lastfm] wrote his first song at the age of 12 or 13, it was his father who wrote out the words and chords so that Simon could teach it to his friend, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Art Garfunkel[/lastfm].

Scott Young, father of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Neil Young[/lastfm], is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame. In 1988, he won the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award, given annually to a top Canadian hockey writer, and it includes induction into the hall. He also wrote novels and short stories.

Despite being a musician himself, former Royal Air Force officer Stanley Dwight discouraged his son Reg from a musical career. After his parents divorced and his mother remarried, Reg’s new stepfather, Fred Farebrother, was more supportive. By the time Reg moved out of Sheila and Fred’s apartment in 1971, he had changed his name to [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Elton John[/lastfm].

At the time Elton moved out of the family home, he was also an international star with several hit albums under his belt. Here’s a track from one of them.
