Honey…We’re Out Of Soap!

soap operas Honey...Were Out Of Soap!

There was a time – not too long ago – when soap operas RULED daytime television.  Oh, we loved to watch “our stories,” didn’t we?  Those days are apparently over.  Two more of the very few soaps left standing have just been cancelled!  They’re BIG ones, too.

It’s a sad day for soap opera fans.

ABC announced Thursday that the sun will set permanently in the fictional towns of Pine Valley and Llanview as All My Children and One Life to Live wrap up for good.

AMC’s last episode – which was rumored last month to be on the horizon – will be in September, while OLTL will end in January 2012.

At the very least, fans needn’t worry they’ll be stuck with controversial, Lost-style endings – producers promise a satisfying conclusion to both soaps’ legacies.

“To honor the core, passionate audience and their rich history with our soaps,” both shows will conclude “in a manner that respects their legacies and the longstanding hopes of many of their viewers,” reads a press release from ABC

The other good news for soap fans: Port Charles, at least, is safe, with General Hospital escaping the chopping block.

ABC executives point out to viewers that times are changing and say they were “guided by extensive research into what today’s daytime viewers want,” and blame, in part, “the changing viewing patterns of the audience” for the shake-up. All My Children began as a half-hour soap opera in 1970. One Life to Live began in 1968.

So what’s new for daytime TV junkies? ABC has two lifestyle shows in the works. The Chew will “focus on food from EVERY angle – as a source of joy, health, family ritual, friendship, breaking news, dating, fitness, weight loss,” according to the press release. Mario Batali will be one of the hosts.

The other show, tentatively titled The Revolution, will focus on health and lifestyle transformations.

I guess with all the real life drama of reality tv, the fictional drama of soaps is no longer of general interest. The times they are a changing.

MAJOR BUMMER!!!! :( I grew up watching all the ABC soaps. As much as I adore Mario Batali, I think our society is seriously warped.
