No Mellencamp in this one. “I Need a Lover” is from [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]John Cougar[/lastfm] back when he just went by the name of, well, John Cougar.  He’d add his proper surname first, lose the Cougar later, and be [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]John Mellencamp[/lastfm].  This one, however, is from his 1979 album entitled simply … John Cougar.

“I Need a Lover” was Cougar’s first big hit. It had previously been released the year before in Australia on his album A Biography. The pop-ish rocker went to #28 in the U.S.  Prior to “I Need a Lover” he had recorded as ‘Johnny Cougar’ on small labels, with none of his albums selling more than a few thousand copies.

“I Need a Lover” would be the first of many Top 40 hits for him, making him one of the most successful singer-songwriters of the ’80s and ’90s. To date, he has 22 Top 40s to his credit, and has sold over 40 million albums. No word has been forthcoming on whether he plans on changing his stage name again.

I doubt he sings that much anymore. He hardly needs a lover as he’s been hanging out with Meg Ryan. It is interesting though, that he kicked model wife and mother of his boys (Elaine Irwin) for an older woman. Rare in Hollywood.
