Ben Franklin once said, “a penny saved is a penny earned.” But as we see Monday, 650,000 of them, well, that’s just a pain in the butt.
Which is exactly what a local man appeared to be hoping for, as he decided to pay a big bill with lots of little coins.
Thierry Cahez is the owner of Opera Desserts in Mira Mesa. He’s loaded his delivery van with a little treat for his bank. Money is money when it comes to value, but not necessarily volume. Thierry wants to pay a $6,500 credit card bill all in pennies.
That’s 650,000 of them. He’s been trying to make the payment for days.
Initially, Thierry says he was told he needed to roll the coins. A Chase Bank spokesman later confirmed it the issue has to do with space and physically storing all that money.
The payment crisis eventually resolved by sending Thierry to another branch with a bigger vault.
Thierry says he’s upset with his bank over a refinance he couldn’t get, and charges and fees on his credit card.
