When it comes to Oscars and the Academy Awards I have my favorites like everyone else, and I’d love to hear what your favorite best picture films are. Email me at Steve.Goddard@cbsradio.com
First, the favs:
1934 – It Happened One Night – Frank Capra classic is still a great story
1939 – Gone With The Wind – I still give a damn
1959 – Ben-Hur – Charleton Heston overacting, but still my favorite of all the winners – must be seen on the big screen
1973 – The Sting – still the best written script of any best picture winner – Redford/Newman – what else do you need?
1992 – Unforgiven – saw it at the old Cine-Capri – westerns are still my favorite and this is one of the best
My picks for worst best picture winners?
1952 – The Greatest Show On Earth – over The Quiet Man and High Noon? Really?
1981 – Chariots of Fire – there’s no fire in this 2 hour snoozefest
1985 – Out of Africa – see above – only longer
1996 – The English Patient – just shoot me
1999 – American Beauty – my least favorite of any Best Picture winner - didn’t care about anyone in this film
Tonight’s Best Picture winner?
The King’s Speech
Feel free to disagree – it’s only an opinion and I’d love to hear yours.
