A lot of people give gift cards at Christmas and if you’re planning on buying any, there are things you need to check with the card for BEFORE you buy it.
If you like giving gift cards – watch out. The FTC has some warnings for us:
• Check to be sure the protective stickers are there BEFORE you buy them. If the PIN number has been revealed – the recipient could be out of luck.
• Make sure they’re from a reputable source – there are a lot of counterfeit ones out there being sold on popular online auction sites.
• Read the fine print – some gift cards have terms and conditions on there that include activation and transaction fees. And while you’re at it – don’t forget to check the expiration date.
And if you’re sending gift cards in the mail – the U.S. Postal Service recommends using a double envelope so people can’t tell what’s inside and requesting confirmation upon receipt.
