Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 hit theaters tonight at midnight! Do you know your Harry Potter lingo?
•Auror— A professional fighter of dark wizards.
•Sirius Black— Harry’s godfather and confidant, who was falsely accused of a terrorist attack in affiliation with the Death Eaters and imprisoned in Azkaban. He was killed in a battle with the Death Eaters.
•Death Eaters — Voldemort’s minions who battle for control of the Ministry of Magic and terrorize the community, killing and torturing those who disagree with them. Each member has a Dark Mark on his or her forearm, a skull with a snake coming out of the mouth, which Voldemort uses to communicate with them.
•Dementor— A creature that guards the prison Azkaban by sucking the souls out of its inhabitants.
•Dobby— The Malfoys’ house elf, who is highly self-deprecating and lives to serve. He loves Harry and follows his every order after being freed from service in the second book.
•Albus Dumbledore— The sage-like headmaster of Hogwarts, described as gentle, old and wise. He is killed by Severus Snape but lives on as the symbol for “good” wizardry. In the seventh movie, he leaves Harry and his friends clues to destroy Voldemort.
•The Dursleys (Vernon, Petunia and Dudley) — Harry’s uncle, aunt and cousin, who he lived with before he found out he was a wizard. The quintessential Muggles, they have disdain for all things related to Harry and the magical world.
•Hermione Granger — One of Harry’s best friends and sidekicks at Hogwarts, a brainiac often involved in his evil-fighting adventures. She is at the top of her class and has Muggle parents.
•Hagrid— Hogwarts’ giant groundskeeper, one of Harry’s closest and most loyal friends.
•Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry— The boarding school for wizards, led by sage-like headmaster Albus Dumbledore, who acts as Harry’s mentor. The series loosely begins with Harry’s acceptance to Hogwarts and ends seven years later in an epic battle on school grounds.
•Horcrux— An object that holds a fragment of a wizard’s soul, making it easier for his to become immortal. Voldemort used Horcruxes, and in the final book, Harry, Ron and Hermione search to destroy them.
•Houses of Hogwarts— Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw, named after the school’s four founders. Harry, Ron and Hermione are in Gryffindor, which is known for its courage. Slytherin houses Draco Malfoy and is known for its ties to dark magic and Voldemort.
•Remus Lupin — Harry’s father’s good friend from school, a friend of Harry’s and onetime professor at Hogwarts. He is a member of the Order of the Phoenix and can transform into a werewolf.
•Draco Malfoy — Harry’s enemy at school who comes from an ancient, pure-blood wizarding family. A bully at Hogwarts, Malfoy is a prominent part of the Slytherin house and was ordered to kill Dumbledore but could not follow through. In the seventh movie, he is the youngest Death Eater and disciple of Voldemort.
•Lucius Malfoy— Draco’s father, who is a Death Eater.
•Ministry of Magic— The wizard government.
•Mudblood— A wizard with Muggle parents. The Death Eaters are prejudiced against them.
•Order of the Phoenix— A group of anti-Voldemort fighters that united when Voldemort was in power but disbanded once Harry defeated him when Harry was a baby. In the seventh book, now that Voldemort is back, the Order’s main goal is to protect Harry and defeat the dark wizards who control the government.
•Harry Potter — The scar-toting, evil-wizard-slaying namesake and protagonist of the books and movies. The seven-part series documents his coming of age as a famous wizard. When he was a baby, Potter defeated the evil wizard Lord Voldemort after his parents’ murders.
•Severus Snape— The hook-nosed potions teacher at Hogwarts who seems to have it out for Harry from the beginning. His true motives come to light by the end of the series.
•Voldemort— Harry’s arch-nemesis, the evil wizard who killed his parents and wants to finish the job. He is the leader of the Death Eaters, a dark magic cult that believes in pure-blood superiority and wreaking havoc on the wizarding community. At the start of the seventh movie, Voldemort has taken over the wizard government, and the community is living in fear.
•The Weasleys (Arthur, Molly, children)— Poor, kind family of Ron that takes Harry under their wing. Their house is called “The Burrow.”
•Fred and George Weasley— Ron’s twin older brothers, who eventually open a magical joke shop and become members of the Order of the Phoenix.
•Ginny Weasley— Ron’s younger sister and, starting in Book 6, Harry’s love interest.
•Ron Weasley— One of Harry’s best friends and sidekicks at Hogwarts, a goofy guy often involved in his evil-fighting adventures. He comes from a wizarding background and is known for being poor and ordinary.
•Wizards— A worldwide community of magic people with a government, entertainment and schools, who live separate from the rest of the common people, or Muggles, who live oblivious to their existence.
