Did David Cassidy Write The Songs?

i write the songs david cassidy Did David Cassidy Write The Songs?

Everyone remembers “I Write The Songs” from [lastfm]Barry Manilow[/lastfm].  The irony was that he DIDN’T write the songs, including that one!  The song was originally recorded by [lastfm]The Captain & Tennille[/lastfm], and then released as a single by [lastfm]David Cassidy[/lastfm].  With David’s concert this weekend at JW Marriott Desert Ridge, I thought it would be fun to watch some classic video of his version of “I Write The Songs.”  By the way, HE didn’t write it, either.

Oh, in case you were wondering, “I Write The Songs” was actually written by [lastfm]Bruce Johnston[/lastfm] of the [lastfm]Beach Boys[/lastfm]!  And, now you know the REST of the story.  (Thank you, Paul Harvey.)

Play “Are You Smarter Than Tom & Maria” each morning this week at 7:40 to win David Cassidy concert tickets!

David & Bruce were good friends & Bruce, who wrote it about fellow Beach Boy Brian Wilson, played it for David, who was recording the LP THE HIGHER THEY CLIMB, THE HARDER THEY FALL, thought it would fit in, & recorded it. Someone at Barry Manilow’s record company insisted he record it, before David C could release it in the USA (it was a big hit overseas for David- he released GET IT UP FOR LOVE in the USA)

    1. Thanks for the knowledge! I appreciate it🙂

But also according to Bruce in an interview, he did not intend the song to be included on Cassidy’s album. And Manilow was very reluctant to record it but Clive Davis insisted. Manilow said he thought the song would make him sound egotistical as if he was bragging about himself. He has parodied the song on recent TV appearances to counter that effect.
