VETERANS DAY – 2010
The annual VA Veterans Day Parade will kick off at 11 a.m. tomorrow, November 11.
This year’s parade theme is “ Defending Freedom, Protecting Dreams,” honoring Veterans who have fought in all Wars and Conflicts including World War II, Korean, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Afghanistan and Iraq.
Once again this year, along the parade route, there will be a number of speaker towers. Those attending the parade can hear some of the highlights of the parade entries.
The Show Mobile will be at the start of the parade on 7th Street and Montecito. Along the route, the Speaker Towers will be located as follows:
- Tower 1: 4501 N. 7th Street
- Tower 2: 4717 E. 7th Street
- Tower 3: 549 E. Camelback Road NEW with dual projection
- Tower 4: 510 E. Camelback Road
- Tower 5: SW Corner of Central & Camelback and NEW with upgraded speakers
- Tower 6: Central & Oregon
- Tower 7: 5510 N. Central Avenue
In its 14th year, the parade is one of the premier Veterans Day parades in the nation, with more than 200,000 people expected to attend. The Phoenix-based commemoration is one of the largest such events in the nation and has been designated as a Regional Site for celebrating the holiday. It was also awarded the prestigious PRSA Silver Anvil for their 2009 efforts.
Presented by the Phoenix VA Health Care System and supported by the Veterans Medical Leadership Council and US Airways the parade will feature approximately 100 entries, including historic military vehicles; Veterans Service Organizations such as the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, and others; marching units, color guards; canine and equestrian units; floats; giant helium balloons; and bands.
Parade Grand Marshals include Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Fred Ferguson, Celebrity Grand Marshal Miss United States Tristan Topps and Veterans Grand Marshals from each conflict since World War II.
PARADE ROUTE: The Phoenix VA Veterans Day Parade runs northbound from the Phoenix VA Health Care System beginning at Seventh Street and Montecito, turning westbound on Camelback Road, then northbound on Central Avenue to Bethany Home Road, where it will destage at North Phoenix Baptist Church.
